The prospect of facing a side looking to make it a dozen wins in a row in all competitions is daunting enough for a Rangers side who were distinctly underwhelming in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Livingston at Ibrox.
So the last thing they need to hear is that one of Napoli’s star men - and standout when the sides met on matchday two in Champions League Group A - is set for a return for the visit of under-fire Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s side to southern Italy on Wednesday. But that is exactly the case with Frank Zambo Anguissa ready to make his comeback from a thigh injury at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium. The 42-times capped Cameroon midfielder was outstanding in the 3-0 win in Glasgow and capped a dominant display by setting up Tanguy Ndombele’s injury time goal that completed the rout.
The 26-year-old, though, picked up an injury in the last Champions League outing against Ajax and was expected to be out for up to three weeks. But Anguissa has made a speedy recovery and even came into consideration for Sunday’s 1-0 victory away to Jose Mourinho’s Roma which kept Luciano Spalletti’s men flying high at the top of the Serie A table.
But Anguissa wasn’t used in the Olympic Stadium and is now gearing up for the visit of Rangers where he could return to the starting XI with the clash against the Ibrox coming before their next league game against Sassuolo. Napoli top Group A and victory over Rangers would almost certainly see them progress as section winners ahead of their final game against Liverpool at Anfield, having thrashed Jurgen Klopp’s side 4-1 in the first game in Italy. Both games kick off at 8pm and if Klopp's men slip then a win over Rangers will give Spalletti and Co a night off in Merseyside.
