Name for Perth's new primary unanimously approved

The name for a new primary school in Perth has been unanimously approved.

Members of the council committee were delighted to approve a name largely picked by the pupils who will attend the school.

Perth and Kinross Council's lifelong learning committee approved the name when it met virtually on Monday, January 31.

The brand new school which will replace both Balhousie Primary School and North Muirton Primary School will be called Riverside Primary.

PKC's executive director of education and children's services Sheena Devlin told the committee: "This new school will bring together two school communities and therefore it is important that the identity of the school - including the name - is representative of both of these communities.

"I'm pleased the pupils were a key part of the process and that they engaged so fully and creatively effectively being part of making history."

The name Riverside Primary won 60 per cent of the vote with 199 of the 269 responses coming from pupils.

Convener Caroline Shiers was "delighted" to move to approve the name and praised the pupils on the "enthusiasm with which they embraced their task".

The Conservative councillor said Riverside Primary "aptly reflects its location by the Tay in Perth".

Conservative councillor John Duff seconded the motion and added: "I look forward to seeing it built, occupied and enjoyed by the pupils and school community."

Perth City North SNP councillor John Rebbeck said: "Had this been a straight replacement of North Muirton Primary School it would have been entirely appropriate for the North Muirton name to have been retained. The local community are quite rightly proud of their school.

"But the new school will encompass North Muirton, Muirton, Balhousie and indeed stretch as far as the city centre. Therefore the school community were asked to consider a new name for the new school build and have come up with Riverside Primary, something we are entirely happy to support.”

Perth City South Lib Dem councillor Liz Barrett thanked everyone - particularly the pupils - "for all their help in choosing this name".

Work has already begun on the new school - being built to Passivhaus standards - within the grounds of North Muirton Primary School. Riverside Primary is scheduled to open in April 2023.
