Nagpur shuttler Malvika Bansod becomes India No. 1 in BAI rankings

NAGPUR: The recent successes at the national level have helped Malvika Bansod scale a new high in India. Nagpur's star shuttler is now India No. 1 in the women's singles rankings, the first time Malvika has achieved the top rank in the country in the senior category.

After analyzing the performance of shuttlers playing in the All India ranking tournaments, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) released the new rankings on Wednesday. With a total of 1,275 points in her kitty, Malvika is leading the chart in the women's singles category. She is followed by Aakarshi Kashyap with 925 points and Tara Shah (825) at the second and third positions respectively. Nagpur's Mugdha Agrey is at the 24th position with 163 points.

Earlier, in the U-19 category, Malvika was No. 1 in the country.

Since Indian star shuttlers PV Sindhu and Saina Nehwal avoid playing in the All India ranking tournaments in the country, both are not in the list of BAI rankings.

In the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings released on Tuesday, Malvika is world No. 39. Among Indian players in the BWF rankings, Malvika is at the third position after Sindhu and Saina. Malvika is followed by Aakarshi Kashyap (44), Anupama Upadhayaya (53), and Ashmita Chaliha at the 57th position.
