Nagpur paddler Jennifer Varghese wins second world medal for India, in line for third

NAGPUR: City’s table tennis queen Jennifer Varghese is on a roll in the ITTF World Youth Championship in Slovenia.

Despite losing both the team and individual event at an early stage, a determined looking Jennifer helped India win its second medal and the city girl is in line to clinch either a gold or silver in girls U-15 doubles event on the concluding day of the world championship.

A total of 14 events, comprising 58 medals, were on offer are in the U-15 and U-19 age categories of the World Championship organized by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).

Of the 14 events, the Indian U-19 girls team were the only medalist in the initial six days of the championship when they clinched a bronze medal after losing their semifinal. For the remaining four days all the Indian paddlers failed to move ahead.

On the penultimate day of the world championship, Jennifer brought cheers to the Indian contingent by playing a pivotal role to win second medal for the country. Jennifer paired up with Abhinandh Pradhivadhi to win U-15 mixed doubles bronze medal.

On Saturday, Jennifer gelled well with Mumbai’s Divyanshi Bhowmick and scripted history by becoming the only Indian pair to enter the finals in Slovenia.

On their way to assure them a silver medal in the U-15 girls doubles event, Jennifer and Divyanshi surprised higher ranked opponents from China, Czech Republic, Spain and France.

In the title clash, the Indian duo will face the challenge of top ranked Japanese pair.
