N Sriram Balaji and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela ease into Australian Open second round

NEW DELHI: India's N Sriram Balaji and Mexican Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela progressed to the Australian Open's second round, securing a dominant straight-sets victory against Robin Haase and Aleksandr Nedovyesov in Melbourne on Thursday.

The partnership from India and Mexico overcame the Dutch-Kazakh combination with a score of 6-4, 6-3, completing the match efficiently in just over 60 minutes.

The victorious pair demonstrated their superiority by delivering 23 winners, whilst their opponents managed only 16.

They secured a break in the sixth game of the opening set, though immediately lost their advantage. Nevertheless, a crucial backhand winner in the tenth game secured them the set.

The second set saw Haase and Nedovyesov falter with an unforced error in the eighth game, presenting a vital break opportunity. Balaji and Reyes-Varela seized this chance effectively to secure both the set and match.

In other results, Rithvik Bollipalli joined fellow Indians Rohan Bopanna and Yuki Bhambri in departing the men's doubles competition.

Bollipalli, playing alongside American Ryan Seggerman, succumbed to sixth seeds Harri Heliovaara of Finland and Britain's Henry Patten, losing 6-7, 1-6.
