Mystery 'UFO' spotted over North Wales mountain turns out to be rare weather phenomenon

An unusual weather phenomenon baffled onlookers with some claiming a strange shape spotted hovering in the sky may have been a UFO.

But the unusual sight seen over Eryri (Snowdonia) mountain, Gwynedd, in North Wales turned out to have a much more grounded explanation.

The mysterious image was taken above Mynydd Mawr, which is just four miles away from Yr Wyddfa, that led to some likening it to a UFO with its curved layers giving it the appearance of a traditional flying saucer, reports North Wales Live.

It may come as a relief though that there's a more conventional explanation for why these scenes occurred - and it doesn't involve little grey men with big heads.

The unusual sight is in fact a phenomenon that happens around the world but is seemingly more rare in Wales. These strange lens-shaped clouds are known as lenticular clouds.

The Met Office says that these clouds form when air blows across a mountain range and sets up a train of large standing waves in the air downstream.

This appears like ripples forming in a river when water flows over an obstruction.

If there is enough moisture in the air, the rising motion of the wave will cause water vapour to condense, forming the unique appearance of lenticular clouds.

These clouds, the Met Office says, are believed to be one of the most common explanations for UFO sightings across the world.
