Mystery surrounds the killing of Liverpool dad gunned down in Cyprus

Police are no closer to catching the mystery gunman who hunted down and killed a Liverpool dad in Cyprus.

Gary Christodoulou was shot while driving between resorts in what his family believe is a mistaken identity killing.

The 33-year-old from Walton who had worked on and off as an events promoter on the island was shot once while he was still driving before his car veered off the road and he tried to escape the gunman, say his family.

After dragging himself from the car he was tracked into shrubs on the opposite side of the road and shot three more times, once in the head and twice in the chest.

The dad-of-one from Walton had been driving back to Aiya Napa from Larnaca on Thursday night (November 1) when he was gunned down.

Police revealed on Sunday (November 4) they still had no suspects for the brutal murder, reports local media.

His heartbroken family are appealing for help to bring his body home to Liverpool to be buried.

Earlier today Sofia, who is in Cyprus trying to bring her brother's body home, told the ECHO in a statement released through a family friend: "Gary was a hard-working man, father of five-year-old Lucas.

"He was a well loved gentleman with a heart of gold. There was no reason for Gary to have been shot, it must be mistaken identity. This has left his family and friends heartbroken."

Police in Cyprus were alerted by a member of the public to the car which was discovered run off the road between Ayia Napa and Rizoelia with the engine running, its headlights still on and a bullet lodged in the passenger seat - but there was no sign of the driver.

Gary's family have been told he escaped the car before being fatally shot in the acacia grove.

Sofia said: "It is believed Gary's vehicle was attacked by a gunman who shot through the window of the car.

"Gary escaped and tried to cross the road where he was then shot again, three times, once in the chest and twice in the head."

The promoter had been working seasonally in Cyprus since 2010 and had been back on the island since February.
