'Mystery' of washing machine door bump solved as expert says it serves a purpose

There are many things, especially electrical items, that we don't know the true purpose of, and the majority of the time we just ignore them and hope for the best. If they have a purpose we need, we may read the instruction manual (or maybe not) but until then, we'll just live in blissful ignorance about unusual things - such as the bump in the washing machine.

Appliance repair technician Renae, aka @renduh on TikTok, took to the social media platform to explain why there is a glass bump in the door of a front-loading washing machine - and people's minds were blown.

In the video, she explained: "If you own or have ever used a front load washing machine, you will probably remember that the door glass has a little bump that comes out like this and there are a couple of reasons why it's designed that way.

"The first and main reason is when you have a front load washing machine, the clothes move around a lot more than they would have in a top load washing machine.

"So the reason it's sloped that way is to push the clothes back into the drum while being washed, that way it doesn't get stuck in the door gasket where it might get stuck and get damaged."

Renae also mentioned that, in some machines, there are tubings in the door gasket.

These allow "water to come in through the gasket and the door glass shape is to let the water go into the drum, rather than collecting in the gasket and just getting stuck there."

People were in awe of the reason for the bump in the glass, with many saying they had no idea.

One wrote: "A fun fact I didn't know that I didn't know!"

Another said: "I did wonder about it. Thank you!"

"I have always wondered about that! Thanks for unraveling a mystery for us!", someone added.

"Thanks, this is good to know", another wrote.
