Human bones found by workmen in a Northumberland town have been identified as the remains of a man who has been missing for more than 30 years.
A three decade old mystery came to an end after the discovery was made in Morpeth three months ago..
Police were called after the bones were unearthed in a wooded area at Cottingwood Lane, which is close to King Edward VI School.
The area was sealed off as forensic officers got to work at the scene.
Now after examination of the remains Northumbria Police has been able to establish that the bones are those of a man in his 60s who went missing in 1992.
His family has been informed and police are not treating his death as suspicious.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “On March 9, we received a report of potential human bones found in a wooded area near Cottingwood Lane in Morpeth.
“An investigation was immediately launched into the discovery. We have since been able to confirm that the remains are of a man in his 60s who went missing in November 1992.
“The man’s family have been notified and our thoughts are with them.
“Officers are not treating the man’s death as suspicious and a report will be made for the coroner.”
