Myspace is plotting a comeback — and Millennials can’t believe it

  • The current owners of Myspace, Viant Technology's Chris and Tim Vanderhook, have announced plans to relaunch the social media platform.
  • Tim Vanderhook confirmed in a documentary that they are "stewards of the Myspace brand" and are "just waiting for the right time to do it."
  • Myspace, launched in 2003, was a leading social media site before being overtaken by Facebook and was later acquired by Viant (then Specific Media) from News Corp in 2011.
  • Despite an investment from Justin Timberlake, the Vanderhook brothers reported over $150 million in losses, and a 2019 server migration resulted in the loss of 50 million songs.
  • A relaunch date has not yet been announced, and it is unclear if the revived platform will return to its music-focused roots or pursue a new direction.
