AIZAWL: Myanmar refugees taking shelter in Mizoram following the military coup there in February last year will not be allowed to purchase land or building here without the permission of the state government.
The deputy commissioners of all districts in the state have recently issued notifications making it mandatory for the refugees to obtain the approval of the competent authorities before buying any property here.
This comes weeks after people of the border village of Farkawn in Champhai district prohibited the Myanmarese refugees from setting up more shops and doing any kind of business there citing the large disparity in the prices of commodities they sell and the ones available locally. Those who had already set up shops were asked to fold up their businesses and dispose of their goods within a month.
