When selecting a wedding present for a happy couple, there will be lots of things to take into consideration - how close you are to them, what they've put on their list, and how much you can afford. What you wouldn't expect is to be called out for the price of the gift you've given - especially when you've paid money to attend the event in the first place.
A woman took to Reddit's 'Am I the a**hole' forum to explain that her sister had got married a month ago and the wedding was 'beautiful and clearly very costly'. Her sister later called her out for only giving a 'small contribution to the honeymoon' - and she was really upset because she insinuated there wasn't any thought in the gift.
She wrote: "My (23f) sister (27f) got married a month ago and the wedding was beautiful and clearly very costly. They had a registry, but almost everything was really expensive (think Dyson purifier, Fornasetti candles, etc). She also had a Tiffany alphabet necklace on it. I wear the same necklace, which my husband gifted to me for our wedding last year. I didn't ask for anything and I know he saved up, Tiffany jewellery is absolutely not the regular standard for us.
"There was an option to give a monetary gift towards the honeymoon, so we ended up gifting £120 ($150) and I think it was more than fair.
"My sister brought up that she noticed I only gave a small contribution to the honeymoon. I said yes, that's the gift. She replied she expected the family to be more generous and that other siblings/relatives got thoughtful gifts. I could've at least gotten the Tiffany necklace since we can afford it.
"I told her no, we can't "afford it" and we gave what we could give, it's not my fault everything on the registry was so expensive. This was at Thanksgiving by the way, there were other people around and I guess they could see the conversation between us was getting heated.
"My sister said I need to stop acting so self-righteous and they can put whatever they want on their registry and others did get the gifts so it's just me "being cheap". My stepmom overheard and said I could've given a larger monetary amount or split the cost of the necklace with someone else, and I didn't appreciate the effort put into the wedding.
"I didn't think I was in the wrong here, but I'm kind of doubting myself. I guess we could've given more money considering this is family? Am I the a**hole?"
She then later edited the post as many people had asked what her sister bought for her when it was her wedding day, and she explained: "We asked for no gifts and to donate to the American Heart Association, or donate toys for a children's hospital instead."
In the comments, people slated the bride and referred to her as 'grabby'.
One wrote: "Who puts jewellery on a wedding gift registry? A wedding gift is supposed to be to help the couple start their married life, not to bedazzle the bride."
Another said: " $150 is plenty. Anyway, complaining about the size of gifts is just trashy."
Someone else stated that she thought the bride was jealous of her Tiffany necklace, writing: "Not the a**hole. Bridezilla wanted what her sister received from her husband. If she wants one then her new husband should have gotten her one. Jewellery doesn’t go on a registry. I bet she put it on there specifically for the original poster."
Another Redditor agreed, commenting: "The comments of the stepmother are really trashy too. Who in their right mind demands Tiffany from a 22-year-old. The mother could have bought it if it is bothering her so much."
