'My next door neighbour is posting photos of my garden on Instagram and pretending it's hers'

A woman took to Mumsnet to share her annoyance that her next door neighbour has been taking pictures of her garden and sharing them on her Instagram to pretend that it's her own. She shared how the next door neighbour's house is in the middle of renovations, but instead of sharing her real property progress, she has used images of the woman's cottage and front garden.

She said: “My next door neighbour posted a photo on Instagram of the front garden of my cottage, including the front porch, with the caption that she had spent six months doing up this thatched cottage. She is a minor actress and next door where she lives (it’s actually the newest of three homes that she has) is a mess since she is doing it up but … there is not one thing in her photo that is her cottage or garden. It is all mine.”

On the 'am I being unreasonable' thread, she asked Mumsnet users: “AIBU [am I being unreasonable] to think this is really cheeky? And is it worth saying anything? My husband says not to fall out with her but I just think it’s really cheeky. What do you all think?”

Many users were in agreement that the woman should comment on the next door neighbour's post, making it clear that it is a picture of her garden. One commenter said: “Cheeky! I'd ask a friend to comment that it's not hers. That's just weird, why put up anything at all!”

Another user agreed that this behaviour was weird, saying: “I would take a picture of her house and put it in the comments saying 'isn't this your house?'. It's just so weird!” While one user said: “I would not hesitate in commenting on the post, that's outrageous!”

However, one user suggested taking a more private approach, saying: “I'd just send a private message saying ‘flattered that you are using my garden for inspiration, happy to share some tips, but for privacy reasons I'd rather you didn't post it on Instagram.’ In other words, don't directly address the 'claiming it as her own' factor, that's almost too batsh*t to merit discussion!” Another user agreed, saying: "I think this is the best response. No nonsense and highlights a significant risk to your privacy with what she’s posted."

Other commenters suggested that this could be a risk, due to the neighbour being known as an actress. One user said: ”I'd get her to take it down as a security risk. If she won't do it when politely asked, a solicitor letter should do the trick.” While another added: “If she has a stalker you'll be in trouble. She's putting your privacy at risk here.”

Some users took a different approach and tried to find the "minor actress" on Instagram, stalking profiles of people they think it could be. One commenter said: "The DM [dear mums] are going through the Insta accounts of actresses right now to see who has recently posted a pic like the one you've described. 3,2,1....and she'll be found out." While other users are waiting to see if the actress will soon be outed in the comments.
