When you work night shifts, it's important to keep the noise down when you return home. Nobody wants to be woken up by a car blaring music or a careless neighbour slamming doors. But there's only so far you can go to help others - or at least so one worker thinks.
The woman has been left in an awkward situation after her neighbour demanded she change her routine. The resident, who lives in a flat below the worker, says she makes too much noise when she goes for a shower. However, the worker likes to go to bed clean, and perhaps understandably, it's not something she wants to give up.
Keen to help her neighbour, the worker tries to keep the noise down when she showers, but she says she shouldn't be held accountable for the 'ancient plumbing' in their building; her neighbour disagrees.
Explaining her conundrum in a post to Reddit, the shift worker said the matter divided her friends after she asked them for advice.
"I live on the top floor of a 3 floor apartment building and Karen lives directly below me, I also work night shift so have pretty much no choice but to do everything at night as im asleep during the day but my roommate starts work as i go to sleep at 5am so I'm always keeping noise to an absolute minimum," she outlined.
Unfortunately, her activities still cause noise despite her efforts, as she found out after sharing her phone number with her neighbour.
When the woman returned home from work, she made dinner and washed up her dishes - none of which you'd expect to cause excessive noise. But her neighbour messaged her to say she wasn't happy about the 'water noise'.
"I replied with what do you mean? And she said she can hear the water moving through the pipes and I said I'm sorry about that but I'm about to have a shower and go to bed I'll be quick, and she basically told me not to or she would lodge a complaint," the post continued. Upset, the worker then sent a response she admits was a 'bit ruder'.
"So I basically said look it sucks you live below me but it's unfair of you to expect me to do everything on your schedule when I'm not even the one making the noise." She added: "I can't turn down our ancient plumbing, it's not my fault it hasn't been updated in years."
As such, she refused to change her schedule. "I'm not going to go to bed smelling like a sweaty donkey," the worker explained. However, she did ask Reddit users for their feedback.
In good news for the worker, commenters supported her decision after hearing her side of the story.
"Her problem is not with you, it's with bad plumbing. You have every right to make normal living noises in your apartment at any hour of the day," read one reply. Someone else advised: "You are allowed to exist as a night shifter. If she keeps it up, block her number."
