My London: Dr Barbara Sturm

Home is…

Düsseldorf, Germany, but when I’m in London I’ll always stay at the Corinthia. The staff there are amazing and always make me feel at home.

Which shops do you rely on?

Bonpoint for cute outfits for my daughter Pepper and then Harrods and Selfridges because it has the most amazing toy department, and I like to drop by and say hi to my teams there. Jessica McCormack is one of my best friends and has the most beautiful jewellery, so I love to go and hang out at her store. Matches has incredible pieces and I’ll always stop by to see my friend Sukeena, who is a personal stylist there — she finds me great outfits. Finally, Portobello Road is my go-to for great vintage pieces.

Best meal you’ve had?

I’ve been going to Kai in Mayfair for years. I love to eat out and have been known to go there two or three times a week. I love, love, love the wasabi prawns and roast Chilean sea bass. The rice that comes with it is so good.

What’s your first memory of London?

Having afternoon tea with my mother at The Dorchester. I remember feeling incredibly excited about being in such a beautiful hotel because it was unlike anywhere I had been before and I loved all of the extraordinary cakes. We would always walk around Mount Street, and I dreamt of having a spa there.

Where do you go to let your hair down?

Chiltern Firehouse and Maison Estelle. The atmosphere at both is cool, especially after dinner. I hardly party — and mostly sneak out early when I do.

Who do you call when you want to have fun?

Jessica McCormack. She’s a soulmate. We were pregnant together and we’ve been super close ever since. She has a great sense of humour so we laugh and laugh.

The most iconic Londoner in history?

Sherlock Holmes. You can’t get more iconic and he played an important part in my childhood.

Ever had a run-in with a police officer?

Thankfully, no.

Where in  London would you recommend for a first date?

China Tang. The food is amazing and I love the 1930s art deco-inspired interior.

Where would you most like to be buried?

Highgate Cemetery is beautiful and has so much history behind it. I can spend hours in there.

If you could buy any building to live in, which would it be?

I had to think about this one. London is so beautiful. I adore the townhouses in Regent’s Park, also Mayfair and Belgravia, too. London really is the chicest place to live. I’m thinking of getting a place there.

What would you do as Mayor for the day?

I’d make everyone drive on the right side. Just for fun. As a German I always almost get run over when crossing the road as I look the wrong way. I don’t know how anyone survives it!

What’s your biggest extravagance?

Cancelling all of my calls and meetings and going skiing. No one can reach me when I am out in the mountains.

What’s your London secret?

Mairead Lewin, my vintage lady. Kate Moss and Sadie Frost told me about her and over the past 15 years I’ve got such great pieces from her. She has an incredible showroom, you have to make an appointment to visit.

What’s your favourite beauty spot?

My Spa & Boutique at 125 Mount Street, of course! I make the best skincare products in the world and paired with our treatment you can realise a full skin transformation.
