'My friends say we have picked cruel names for kids but we don't see the issue'

A married couple has come under fire from their friends over what they plan to name their child who is due later this year. The pair do not know the sex of the baby at this time so have come up with a name for if they have a boy or a girl.

Both soon-to-be parents were very happy with the choices but when the woman told her friends about what they have opted for, they said she was ridiculous and the kid would end up getting bullied.

However, both parents cannot see what the issue is and still like the names - and sought opinions online on whether their options were 'cruel.'

Taking to Mumsnet, the pregnant woman, who remained anonymous, said her friends felt the names were far too old fashioned.

In the post, she said: "My husband and I are expecting our first child together in early June this year and we're both a mixture of nerves and excitement.

"We are both fans of traditional names and so have decided on Arthur for a boy or Edith for a girl (we've decided to wait until the actual birth to find out the gender). I think these names are really sweet and could work for both a child and adult."

She went onto say that both sets of families love the names but issues arose when she told her friends.

"When I mentioned it to my friends they started laughing and told me it was cruel to name our child something so old fashioned as they'll be ridiculed at school," she explained.

"My husband and I don't see where they're coming from."

In response, many have supported the parents and said these names are lovely and would not get them ridiculed at school.

One person wrote: "I also love both of those names."

While another stated: "Arthur and Edith are lovely names. Your friends sound vile."

A third penned: "Love both names, ignore your friends."
