He left his mates at the Private Bin and risked his entire career

Army veteran David Gibson has vivid memories of waking in Canberra in the 1980s terrified life as he knew it was about to end, because he'd spent the night before dancing at a club.

On a night out at the famous hotspot Private Bin, he separated from his mates.

"As is always the case, your 'gaydar' kicks in," said Mr Gibson, and he found his way into a gay social dance at the Meridian Club - one of Canberra's first gay safe spaces.
