Murderer of Brit mum Caroline Crouch STILL maintains innocence despite guilty verdict

The deluded Greek pilot who killed his Brit wife continues to act like a mourning husband after being found guilty of her murder yesterday.

Babis Anagnostopoulos, 34, was sentenced to life for killing Caroline Crouch, 20, the mother of their 11-month-old daughter, Lydia, at a court in Athens before being hauled off to one of the capital's most-notorious prisons.

The helicopter pilot initially claimed Caroline was tortured and killed by a mob of Albanian thieves the police had been chasing after they broke into their ground-floor maisonette in an upmarket neighbourhood on the outskirts of the city in May last year.

Cops eventually untangled his web of lies with data found on the couple's smart devices, prompting him to confess to killing the 20-year-old in a "crime of passion" after she asked him for a divorce.

He told them how he suffocated her while listening to her desperately screaming for her life.

But despite being found guilty after a five-week trial that has gripped Greece, he told reporters today he "cannot get over" losing the wife that he murdered.

He told TV channel ANT1: "I don't have anything to tell you, only that I am distraught and cannot get over the loss of Caroline."

The baffled anchor responded: "It's really as if he doesn't get it...that it was him who killed Caroline...it's all part of that act that he was in a blurred state of mind".

In earlier interviews, twisted Anagnostopoulos spun a web of lies to confuse investigators and avoid punishment for his wife's murder.

The day after she was found dead, he told TV crews: "I wish no-one ever goes through what we went through last night. It was a nightmare.

"We begged the thieves not to harm us. We told them where the money was and asked them to leave us alone. The police will catch them."

And one day later, he spoke with the Mirror - claiming how he was in "no condition" to speak at length about her.

He then said: "She was an amazing person, full of life and full of love. Our lives will never be the same without her.

"Take care of your family, sir. Cherish your loved ones as much as you can."

The brazen monster was even seen hugging Caroline's grief-stricken mum during a memorial to her on the island of Alonnisos - just moments before cops approached him at the service.

Athens police told him there had been a breakthrough in the case and asked him to identify a suspect.

Cops flew him to Athens where they told him he was the suspect.

Investigators carried out an eight-hour interrogation and Anagnostopoulos cracked, admitting to killing Caroline when she told him to leave the house after an argument.

They said Anagnostopoulos admitted he killed his wife in front of their daughter then strangled the family's dog as he tried to make it look like a robbery gone wrong.

The 33-year-old helicopter pilot faced four counts: premeditated murder, animal abuse, perverting the course of justice and lying to authorities.

He was found guilty of all counts at the end of a five-week trial that has gripped Greece.

The Athens court meted out the toughest punishment it could for Anagnostopoulos.

In addition to life in prison he was handed an extra eleven years and six months in prison for the brutal murder of the couples pet husky Roxy and deliberately perverting the course of justice.

The pilot was also told he would have to pay a 21,000 euro fine.
