Government commissioners to ask for more control over Liverpool Council
The lead commissioner at Liverpool City Council has says his team will call on the government to significantly increase its control of the troubled local authority.
Mike Cunningham currently leads a team of four government-appointed commissioners, who were installed to oversee the work of key departments at Liverpool Council just over a year ago. Their arrival followed revelations of a damning government inspection that found huge failings at the Cunard organisation.
Mr Cunningham said: "There are some areas that are very problematic. Our assessment is that the response to the problems has been nowhere near what's required. We are already being supported by a financial adviser and if that position turns into a finance commissioner then so be it."

Doctor's warning as he's told he can't board flight at departure gate
A man has issued a warning after he and his wife were stopped from boarding a flight.
Dr Bob Banks was travelling to Munich to give a talk this week and planned to travel onto Milan with his wife Gillian for a holiday. But as the couple went to board their KLM flight on Friday, Dr Banks was told his passport was invalid.
Dr Banks said: He said: "My passport was initially looked at by a trainee who was going to let me through but a senior member of staff looked over the trainee's shoulder at my passport said it wasn't valid for travel. The explanation was that due to the rule changes in January, the expiry date was simply 10 years after the date of issue, not the date given in the passport, which clearly stated its expiry date to be April 5, 2023."
