Munich train crash: One dead and multiple injured after collision in German city

One person has died and at least 10 others are injured after two trains collided in Germany.

The horror smash took place near Ebenhausen-Schäftlarn station in Munich at around 4.40pm today.

One of the train drivers is apparently trapped in their cab after the head-on crash.

Local newspaper the Münchner Merkur reports that one of the drivers died in the smash.

The force of the collision is said to have thrown one of the carriages off its wheels, leaving the railway line blocked in both directions.

Images shared on social media show a derailed train, with shocked passengers standing nearby.

One eyewitness, Carlos, 19, told the Münchner Merkur that the crash took place shortly after his train left Ebenhausen station.

He said all of the passengers on board were thrown from their seats and an old woman was left bleeding on the ground.

Carlos then pulled the red emergency lever to open the train door, enabling people to escape onto the embankment.

Another eyewitness told the newspaper that their carriage started to fill with smoke after the head-on crash.

According to Bild newspaper, a different passenger described hearing a 'bang' before being thrown forward in their train.

Munich Police tweeted: "In the southern district of Munich, two S-Bahn trains collided in the area of the Ebenhausen-Schäftlarn S-Bahn station.

"There are numerous emergency services on site, there are injured people, the route is currently completely closed."

It is believed there were likely students on board the trains, Bild reports.
