Mumbai: Tata Power's green initiatives reduce 126 kilotonnes of carbon emissions

MUMBAI: More than 17,000 Tata Power’s consumers in Mumbai have opted for green energy (solar and wind energy), an official said on World Environment Day.

Every year, World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5.

"Besides, we have also promoted solar rooftop installations across the city. We have provided rooftop solar panels to 395 consumers who have opted for net metering," said an official.

Net metering is a system wherein whatever solar power you generate goes to the grid and this is adjusted with your monthly electricity bill, resulting in savings.

"We are providing subsidies for the solar rooftops under a scheme by the ministry of new and renewable energy. We provide rooftop solar panels to customers through our network of authorised and exclusive channel partners in such states," he said.

The subsidy is 40% upto 3KW solar rooftop installation and 20% upto to 10KW. This is as per government rules and guidelines.

The official further said that the company’s annual green power sales has accounted for more than 180 MU's (million units) which has helped mitigate 126 kilotonnes carbon emissions.

In addition to this, the company has a unique demand side management scheme under which more than 6,500 energy efficient appliances have been delivered to customers so far helping in saving huge amounts of electricity. Also more than 3 lakh electricity customers have registered for e-bill and 85% of transactions are done through digital payment options.

The official added that Tata Power has also installed around 54,000 smart meters in Mumbai.
