Mumbai: IMD issues forecast for heavy rains at isolated places from Sunday

MUMBAI: Several parts of Mumbai witnessed significant rain activity on Thursday morning with low lying areas of Kurla witnessing localised flooding as well. Adjoining areas like Thane witnessed rain activity through the day.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar from Sunday with heavy rains forecast at isolated places.

This comes after a weak onset that was declared on June 11 following two days of pre-monsoon activity. Since the onset that was declared, Mumbai and adjoining areas did not witness any heavy rain activity.

In the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Thursday, the IMD Colaba & Santa Cruz observatory recorded 18 mm & 11.7 mm of rains.

Sushma Nair, scientist IMD Mumbai said, that in view of active monsoon conditions, rainfall activity over Konkan and adjoining ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra is expected to gradually increase from June 18. "Widespread rainfall activity with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is expected over the region during the period," she said.

The weather bureau has also issued a fisherman warning and advised them against venturing into the sea on June 20. "Squally weather with wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely to prevail along and off North Maharashtra coast on 20 June. Fishermen are advised not to venture along and off North Maharashtra coast during above mentioned period," stated the IMD bulletin.

In the impact expected the IMD has said that localised inundation/flooding of low lying areas and urban areas, disruption of traffic due to water logging over the roads, disruption to road, rail, air and ferry transport and also occasional gusty winds with speed reaching 40-50 gusting to 60 kmph along and off the coast resulting in possibilities of damage to vulnerable /temporary structures can be expected.
