MUMBAI: The Hinjewadi police on Friday initiated a probe against a Mumbai-based tour operator and his accomplice for allegedly cheating a woman and her 10 relatives of Rs 7.50 lakh last month by promising them Hajj pilgrimage.
According to the police, the woman (60) and her family members from Pune and Mumbai decided to perform Hajj pilgrimage in October, this year. They enquired with the tour operator about the same and he gave a tour package to them.
Citing the FIR, sub-inspector Ravindra Mudal of the Hinjewadi police said, "The woman and her relatives transferred Rs 7.50 lakh to the tour operator for booking flight tickets, accommodation facilities, and local transportation in Saudi Arabia. The tour operator had shared his bank account details with the victim."
Mudal said, "However, the tour operator did not make any bookings. When the woman asked for the tickets and other details, the tour operator started making excuses. The woman became suspicious and demanded a refund. The tour operator agreed to the refund and gave the complainant a cheque, which bounced. Later, he refused to refund the amount."
"Our team will track down the tour operator in the next few days. We will also check if he has cheated others in the same fashion," he said.
