Mum 'stabbed boyfriend with kitchen knife in drunken row over song lyrics'

A woman carried out a 'vicious' attack against her boyfriend after the pair got into a drunken row over song lyrics.

Maria Jones stabbed her partner of six years in the stomach with a kitchen knife during the incident on February 6.

The 49-year-old then delayed calling paramedics to treat the victim, who was left with 'his intestines protruding through the stab wound'.

He was later rushed to intensive care where he received emergency treatment and ended up spending 20 weeks in hospital, Birmingham Live reports.

Jones, of Moat Road in Oldbury, was sentenced to 28 months in prison for the attack, which left her victim scarred for life.

Rachel Pennington, prosecuting at Wolverhampton Crown Court, said the pair were separated but kept in contact with one another before the assault on February 6 last year.

Her boyfriend travelled to Jones' address that night, after finishing work for the week, with a view of staying for the night.

She said: "They spent the evening listening to music and talking. [The victim] noticed, shortly before 1am, that the atmosphere changed."

One of them went to buy alcohol before they continued listening to music. But there was then a "disagreement about who knew the words" to a song, said Ms Pennington.

ones then went into the kitchen and took a knife from a drawer, which was witnessed by her partner, who shut the door. He then told Jones to 'stop f****** about', the court heard.

But then Jones came in and stabbed him in his stomach, said Ms Pennington. She then delayed in assisting her partner with medical assistance, before calling for an ambulance later that morning.

"The defendant did eventually phone for an ambulance," said Ms Pennington. "The ambulance service responded to a call at 5.46am that morning."

The stab wound measured two inches in length and left the victim's "intestines protruding" from his body. He was rushed to the trauma centre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham.

CCTV was used as evidence in the case. Defending Jones, Simon Burch, said that it showed the victim "on top of the defendant moments before he suffered the injury".

He claimed his client had suffered "emotional abuse" in their relationship. Mr Burch said Jones had also witnessed unhealthy relationships from a very early age in her life and struggles with alcohol.

Mr Burch added: "She has demonstrated real remorse and empathy for what happened."

Jones admitted stabbing her boyfriend, who was injured with a single blow. She was initially charged with Section 18 wounding with intent. But she pleaded guilty to a lesser offence of Section 20 unlawful wounding. That plea was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service.

The court heard that Jones is a mum and a carer for her own mother, and she has no previous convictions.

The judge, recorder Mr Nixon, said: "It is tragic to see someone like you standing before the court. This was a vicious, drunken attack with a large kitchen knife, provoked by nothing more than who knew the words to a song.

"The injury was severe. His intestines were protruding through the stab wound. You left him to suffer. He asked for help.

"When you phoned the ambulance, you didn't want to help him at that time. It is clear you could have killed him with a large kitchen knife." Had the case gone to trial, and if Jones would have been found guilty that way, she would have received three-and-a-half years in prison.

But she was given one third off her sentence, which is the maximum that can be reduced, and was jailed for 28 months.
