Mum slammed after refusing to tip delivery driver for €95 Dominos order

A mother has faced strong backlash after refusing to tip a delivery driver for a €95 Dominos order.

The multinational chain, which has 88 stores across Ireland, is famed for its wide array of pizzas, and often offers deals to help people secure discounts when placing takeaway orders.

Tipping can be a divisive topic, particularly when food venues charge for delivery.

One mum planning to spend €95 on a takeaway order for six people, including two toddlers, has said she doesn't want to tip as she'll be paying €2.50 for delivery. She believes the employer "should be paying a proper wage".

According to Indeed, the average Domino's delivery driver in Ireland earns €696 per week, although this will vary depending on location and modes of delivery transport.

The mum took to Mumsnet's popular Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) thread to seek advice and to gauge whether she was in the wrong for not wanting to pay the driver a tip.

In a post simply titled " Should I tip the pizza delivery person? " the mum explained what she'd be ordering and then said: "IMO [in my opinion] the bill is [larger] than the [usual] 50-ish after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman. A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I pay 2 quid in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage.

"It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip. What do you think but I'm almost a 100% [certain] I won't (on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt)."

The mum's post was met with a range of responses from divided Mumsnet users, ECHO reports.

One said: "Yes you should. They earn **** all." Another said: "Wtf is wrong with you?"

A third disagreed and commented: "I never tip delivery drivers, seems odd to." Another Mumsnet user said: "I only tip if I pay cash. I wouldn't tip in the circumstances you describe."

A fifth said: "I agree that they should be paid a decent wage but the reality is they're probably not. So if you can afford to spend €95 on pizza, you can probably afford a couple of extra pounds for a tip."

And another said: "Absolutely tip. We have never not tipped a food delivery. We don't tip as much as in a restaurant, but I'd be giving them at least a fiver." One Mumsnet user said: "Don't be so mean".

But another commented: "Dominos are now hassling you for tips, sending an email reminder, guilting you by naming the driver. I replied in feedback, that if you value your staff so much, then pay them a better wage. Dominos aren't cheap by any stretch, they now charge for delivery too. I've never tipped delivery drivers and places I've worked didn't allow drivers (or anyone) to accept tips. Really, why is everyone so keen to enable these big businesses to exploit their staff and us."

Another simply added: "Yeah I tip. Whether other people choose not to I don't care". At the time of writing, 60% of Mumsnet users voted the mum was being unreasonable not to tip the delivery driver.

It comes as Domino’s pizza has launched a major recruitment drive to hire 1,000 new staff across Ireland in a bid to cope with the international football championship season.

Up to five billion customers are expected to watch football competitions around the world, while up to 700,000 pizzas will be ordered as part of the championship.

The world-famous company is hoping to recruit a wide range of staff including delivery drivers, in store team members and pizza makers.

A recent poll by Domino’s show 77 percent of staff members believe they are part of a great team, while 55 percent value their flexible hours.

Another 78 percent say training and promotion opportunities are a key advantage to their jobs and 80 percent said pizza is the main thing they love about being employed by Dominos.

Scott Bush, Domino’s Pizza Group, Ireland CEO said: “As we approach a very busy period with international football and the festive peak, we are excited to announce 1,000 new roles with Domino’s across Ireland. We are proud to be able to offer a range of flexible in-store and contract driver roles, which may be suited to those looking for additional employment opportunities or to fit around study or family life. So, if the idea of being part of our world-class pizza squad is up your street, then a role at Domino’s could be for you”.
