Mum shares way to make car travelling less 'overstimulating' for parents and kids

Sometimes, travelling with your children can feel really daunting. You want them to be entertained so they won't be unhappy, but if you're focusing on driving, you can't be the one to keep their mind off the fact you're on the move.

But thankfully, one mum has shared her handy way to keep her children entertained on road trips, ensuring that nobody in the car gets "over stimulated."

Jayme, who posts on TikTok as @teachtalkinspire, captioned her video saying: "This was life-changing for me as a mom", explaining that "podcasts have become quite the lifesaver" for her, describing them as "part of our daily routine."

Jayme said she was "so happy" thanks to podcasts. She continued: "Not only are podcasts a fantastic way to cut down on screen time (if you need to) but they are also a wonderful tool to practice active listening with our little ones.

"Podcasts, when done right for our littles, promote literacy by hearing stories, songs, and conversations out loud.

"Next time you have a long car ride (or a short one!) are cooking dinner, or just relaxing at home try turning on a podcast for your kiddos. I guarantee they will love it!"

In the video, Jayme could be seen driving, and over the video she'd written: "One of the best things I started doing for myself as a mum was playing podcasts for my child in the car when I needed a break but didn't want to just hand over my phone.

"We now have so many favourites and it makes car rides enjoyable and less over-stimulating and less overstimulating for the both of us."

Parents were shocked that there were podcasts aimed at children, commenting: "It never even occurred to me that there's such a thing as podcasts for kids!"

"Screenshotted, thank you!", someone praised.

Another said: "We listened to so many books on tape with my parents growing up and some of the best memories were in the car laughing and crying together to stories!"

The mum's top podcast recommendations for kids are:

  • Arthur podcast

  • The odd squad podcast

  • Disney MAGIC of storytelling

  • Stories podcast

  • Julie's Library

  • Molly of Denali
