Mum screamed 'you've broken my hand' after waking up in hospital

A mum was left screaming in agony after being admitted to hospital when her hand became trapped between her bed and the door.

Kerri Dann McBurney had been admitted to hospital when she fell ill while visiting her brother in Blackpool on Saturday, March 25. An ambulance was soon phoned and took her to hospital at around 6pm.

She was sent for scans and when she was moved at around 4am on Sunday, March 26, the mum-of-two was soon screaming in pain despite being asleep minutes before. She told the ECHO: "I went in with a chest infection because I have COPD.

"At around four o'clock in the morning, I was being moved from A&E to a ward and that's when the incident happened. I didn't see him, he was pushing the bed from behind my head.

"We went through the doors and I screamed 'you've broken my hand' and he just kept pushing. I heard the crack in my hand."

The 46-year-old from Skelmersdale explained that it was only when a nurse intervened that the porter stopped the bed in Blackpool Victoria Hospital. She said: "The nurse shouted for him to stop while I was screaming.

"Then the nurse came running over and had to keep shouting to him to stop pushing while she looked at my hand. When I shouted he just carried on."

Now Kerri is waiting to find out if she needs surgery on her left hand after being told she suffered at least two fractures. She explained she has a number of health problems as she suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a group of lung conditions which cause breathing problems. She also has a metal plate in her hand from suffering from Kienböck's disease 20 years earlier which affects the blood flow to a bone in her wrist.

She said: "The nurses kept apologising for him. It's one person's fault, not everybody else's. The amount of staff who came over to apologise to me but he never came over to me. He spoke English so there was no language barrier, he could have just come back and apologised."

Kerri claims to have only been discharged on Wednesday, March 29, despite her claiming she would have been back at her brothers on the Sunday afternoon had she not had her hand fractured. Now she is back at her home in Skelmersdale with her partner and son.

Bridget Lees, Director of Nursing, Midwifery, Allied Health Professionals and Quality, said: "We would like to extend our apologies to Ms McBurney for the incident that led to her injury. The Trust aims to provide caring, safe and respectful treatment at all times and we are sorry that Ms McBurney did not receive the high standard of care we would expect for all our patients.

"We wish Ms McBurney well with her recovery and treatment.”
