Mum's 'wonky tin' hack could save you money off your weekly grocery shop

As the cost of living rises, we're all looking for subtle ways to ensure our shopping is cheaper. Some people use loyalty schemes at their supermarket of choice, and others scour through newspapers and magazines for money off coupons, but one mum has come up with a 'wonky tin' hack that could save you money off your next grocery shop.

The self-proclaimed 'Duchess of thrift', who posts on TikTok as @duchessofthrift, shared a video that reads: "Cost of living, cheeky hack, ask for a discount." In the caption, she even hashtagged 'if you don't ask, you don't get', encouraging others to do what she was doing.

The thrifty saver admitted that the tip was cheeky, but if you never try, you'll never know.

She said: "Wonky tins - obsessed with doing this.

"You know you get the regular yellow sticker section, well these are not in them.

"When you're buying tins of soup and essentials for your store cupboard, have a good rummage through, so in Sainsbury's these are not necessarily at the front, and we go through all the tins of soup and find the dented ones and they have a yellow sticker on.

"If you find a dented one without a sticker on, be cheeky! Go up to customer services and say 'this can is dented, can I have it for a cheaper price please?' and they'll knock it down."

She explained that she got a 90p tin for 59p, saving 31p. It may not seem like a lot, but it does add up over time.

In the comments, people were saying that the idea was great, with some joking 'oops, I've dropped the whole shelf'.

One wrote: "Lots of tins might start accidentally falling on the floor in supermarkets now", followed by a crying with laughter face emoji.

Another joked: "I would but would never be able to live it down if they refused!!"

"Totally agree, doesn't hurt to go and ask", someone agreed.

"Dented tins could have air holes in and be not as fresh of course you'll get it cheaper they want rid of it", one TikToker pointed out, with another saying it's fine as long as you use the tins quickly.

The Duchess of thrift did say it was a step too far to purposefully damage items though, saying it was 'crossing the line'.
