A mum pregnant with twins in Liverpool doesn't know when she'll be permanently reunited with her husband.
Elena Malenko, 36, woke to the sound of bombs on the morning Russia invaded Ukraine. The former diplomat and language teacher had started packing in December after seeing pictures of Russian troops gathering at the border, so they were ready to flee the next day when a Russian missile fell on a neighbouring house as they slept.
The streets of Kyiv were full of people dragging suitcases and kids to railway stations as they made their way west, towards the Polish border and safety. Elena's husband, Grygorii, is a member of Kyiv City Council, placing the them and their two sons "on the Russian hitlist" and bringing potential peril should the invading forces have encircled Kyiv.
