Mum ordered to remove 'offensive' number plate wanted to 'spread cheer' after son's death

A mum who was ordered to remove her 'offensive' number plate by police said she just wanted to 'spread cheer' following the tragic loss of her son. Toni Brand bought the 'SL11 THO' registration plate from the DVLA website before adding screws in between the '11' to give the appearance of a 'U'.

However, the 47-year-old was left 'crying' on the roadside after she was pulled over in her white Volkswagen Scirocco and told to remove the screws by the officer. Toni said she realised that life is too short after her 'amazing' son Ricky took his own life and just wanted to 'make people smile' with the funny number plat, Manchester Evening News reports.

"Through his death I have learned to live and I have learned to smile and giggle", she said. Toni, of Tredegar in Blaenau Gwent, was fined £344 by a court after being stopped by police on Nantgarw Hill.
