Mum of Sophie Lancaster speaks out as man who beat her to death released

The mum of Sophie Lancaster, beaten to death by a gang in 2007 for "being a goth", has expressed her disgust at the decision to release one of her daughter's killers from jail.

Then aged 16, Ryan Herbert was jailed for life in 2008 for murdering Sophie in a park in Bacup, Lancashire. Now, the Parole Board has decided that Herbert can be released on licence, 15 years after the attack, reports LancsLive.

Responding to the decision, her mum, Sylvia Lancaster, said: "Once again we have a justice system that fails to deliver justice". Sylvia said she could not understand the decision being made "because they have done well in prison" when the Parole Board knew "the reality of the level of violence" Sophie had been subjected to.
