Mum of four finds 'spider egg' in bunch of Tesco bananas

A mum was shocked to find a spider egg on a banana after unpacking her food shopping from Tesco.

Carolyn, who asked to only be referred to by her first name, bought the bananas from the Tesco Superstore on Hawthorne Road, Litherland on Monday, January 17.

But when the mum-of-four got home from the supermarket she saw something "not quite right" on the side of one of the bananas in her shopping.

Attached to the banana was an egg-sac that she believed was from a spider.

Carolyn she said: "After I had been shopping in the big Tesco in Litherland, I was packing the shopping away and I noticed something on the bananas.

"We searched on the internet to see what they could be and it came back with spider eggs."

Carolyn tied the bananas in a plastic bag to contain them, while her son offered to take them back to the same Tesco store.

She claims she saw a member of staff place the bananas back out on the shop floor.

The mum then contacted customer services at Tesco who put her in contact with the manager at the Litherland store.

She added: "I was just really unhappy with how it was handled to be honest overall."

A Tesco spokesperson said : "We sell millions of bananas every week and our growers work carefully to clean and inspect all our fruit before it is packaged.

"We're sorry that on this extremely rare occasion a spider egg appears to have made it through undetected.

"In a situation like this, a customer can return the item to one of our stores for a full refund."

They added: "While the bananas were briefly returned to the shelf by mistake, they were not resold and have now been disposed of."
