A mum has faced backlash after admitting that she didn't plan to tip the delivery driver on a £85 Domino's takeaway. Taking to Mumsnet, the woman explained that she had placed an order for six people from fast food giant, including two toddlers.
However, she said she wasn't going tip when it was dropped off - as she had already paid a £1.99 for delivery. The parent added that she would usually 'feel bad' for not tipping, but at the same time believes the employer "should be paying a proper wage", the Liverpool Echo reports.
According to Indeed, on average a delivery driver for Domino's is paid £9.72 per hour, however this can vary depending on location and mode of transport used to deliver. The mum took to Mumsnet's popular Am I Being Unreasonable (AIBU) thread to ask others for advice on the situation.
In a post simply titled " Should I tip the pizza delivery person? " the mum explained what she'd be ordering and then said: "IMO [in my opinion] the bill is [larger] than the [usual] 50-ish after discounts - I will feel bad not tipping the man/woman.
"A quid is not right but then I'm thinking why should I as I pay 2 quid (1-99) in delivery and the employer should be paying a proper wage. It will be easier not to tip as paying online but I don't want the delivery person giving me faces etc though that would make it easier for me later ie not giving a tip.
"What do you think but I'm almost a 100% [certain] I won't (on the odd occasion we eat out we tip 10% but it does hurt)."
The mum's post was met with a range of responses from divided Mumsnet users. One said: "Yes you should. They earn **** all."
Another said: "Wtf is wrong with you?" A third disagreed and commented: "I never tip delivery drivers, seems odd to."
Another Mumsnet user said: "I only tip if I pay cash. I wouldn't tip in the circumstances you describe."
A fifth said: "I agree that they should be paid a decent wage but the reality is they're probably not. So if you can afford to spend £85 on pizza, you can probably afford a couple of extra pounds for a tip."
And another said: "Absolutely tip. We have never not tipped a food delivery. We don't tip as much as in a restaurant, but I'd be giving them at least a fiver." One Mumsnet user said: "Don't be so mean".
But another commented: "Dominos are now hassling you for tips, sending an email reminder, guilting you by naming the driver. I replied in feedback, that if you value your staff so much, then pay them a better wage. Dominos aren't cheap by any stretch, they now charge for delivery too. I've never tipped delivery drivers and places I've worked didn't allow drivers (or anyone) to accept tips. Really, why is everyone so keen to enable these big businesses to exploit their staff and us."
Another simply added: "Yeah I tip. Whether other people choose not to I don't care". At the time of writing, 60% of Mumsnet users voted the mum was being unreasonable not to tip the delivery driver.
