A mum is devastated after taking her pregnant dog to vet for a C-section - only for all seven puppies to tragically die.
Niketa Hayes, 27, says she took her dog Charlie to PDSA vets and claims she was told her dog and the puppies were healthy just hours before hear the heartbreaking news.
She took her heavily pregnant dog to the vet on April 7 this year after deciding to get one of the pet's symptoms checked out, DerbyshireLive reported.
Charlie had fallen pregnant after a trip to the park ended with her getting caught up with another dog.
The pooch was not bred for money and it was an accidental pregnancy, Niketa said.
Niketa said: “My dog was pregnant and due in about two or three days, and she was losing clear mucus from down below."
"I didn’t know if that was normal or not so I took her PDSA to ask.
"The vet took her for a scan and he said everything seems fine and all the heartbeats are strong, but we think it’s best if we get a C-section approved."
After signing the paperwork, Charlie was then taken for a C-section and Niketa then called to check on her dogs.
She said: “I waited a couple of hours and I didn’t hear anything back from them so I gave them a call and the vet came on the phone and said, ‘I’m sorry to tell you that all seven pups are dead’”.
When the mum questioned the puppy fatalities, she claims she was told that the litter was weak.
However, Niketa, from Derby, says she was told prior to the operation that all the puppies were in good health, with strong heartbeats.
A PDSA spokesperson said: “We’re very sorry to hear about the loss of Charlie’s puppies and would like to send our sincere condolences to her family.
"Due to client confidentiality rules we are unable to comment on individual cases.
"We aim to provide a caring and professional service at all times, and our vets and vet nurses work to the highest Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) guidelines and standards.
"We take all complaints very seriously and would encourage Ms Hayes to contact us directly so that we can discuss the situation with her.”
In a similar case, another pet owner from Derby, Alina O'Malley, 26, was heartbroken after she says her 13 pedigree puppies died following an operation on their mother at a vets surgery.
