Although there have been incidents of switching newborns, they're incredibly rare.
To reduce the chances of this happening, hospitals have a number of precautions in place; like giving babies a band with their details on and even footprinting.
But this doesn't always put parents at ease.
Mum-to-be Sahm, who is 37 weeks pregnant, came up with a plan to ensure this doesn't happen to her and shared the idea on her TikTok @my_sahm_lifestyle
The video, which has been viewed more than 56,000 times, was captioned: "Have y’all seen switched at birth?"
"Yeah...he’s getting a cute white or blue toe at birth lmfao."

She explains: "Me paranoid because I’ve heard of babies being switched at birth, so whatever works and keeps me at ease I’ll do!
"People thinking I’m crazy for thinking of painting my son’s toenail when he’s born."
Since being posted, the video has racked up more than 2,000 likes and dozens of comments from other parents who admitted they had done the same.
One person said: "I did exactly that with my 2 babies. Their dad went with them every time they took them for anything but it gave me peace."
Another wrote: "Girl you just gave me a good idea lol I’m taking a blue nail polish and [I don't care] who tells me I’m crazy lol."
A third commented: "That's very clever. Do it!!!! You are the Mumma."
Others shared alternative ideas that could put her mind at ease, as one woman suggested: "I just didn’t let them take my baby out the room whatsoever. "They did everything right in front of me."
Sahm replied, saying: "Of course, I want that too but sometimes things can happen. I want to be extra prepared in case baby has to leave the room."
Another remarked: "I took a mental note of the positioning of my baby’s milk spots."
And someone else suggested that she put a sticker somewhere on the baby's body where the nurse can't see.
