Mum banned from kitchen on Christmas after 'always ruining dinner'

A woman says she will be cooking everything herself on Christmas Day after her mum made another massive error last year that ruined the dinner.

She explained how she gave her mum another chance after many mistakes over the years, like buying food too far in advance meaning it goes out of date, or forgetting bits and pieces, so she was furious when her children were left very disappointed on December 25 in 2021.

Taking to the 'Am I Being Unreasonable' forum on Mumsnet, the woman said: "After many years of 'hilarious' disaster Christmas dinners we stopped going and did our own at home.

"Last year she kept asking us to go there again. I kept saying no and making excuses but she made me feel guilty and I eventually caved."

The woman said her daughter was very excited about going round to the grandparents and they had promised her some lovely stuffing, cranberry sauce and pigs in blankets at their dinner.

To make sure her mum was prepared, the woman even phoned her two days before to ask if she needed anything bought last minute but the mum assured her that everything was under control.

When she asked her mum if the turkey had been defrosted she insisted she would do it straight away. The author of the post continued: "Christmas Day arrives, we got there my mum says 'I'm so sorry, you'll never believe what I've done'.

"She'd forgotten to take the turkey out of the freezer. I was fuming."

When the mum explained she had sausages she could cook for dinner the woman explained that her daughter doesn't like them and wouldn't want to eat that on Christmas Day.

The woman stated: "I say 'I've got gammon at home, I’ll drive back and get it. My mum says 'oh, ok … what do you want with it? Mash?'

"I say just whatever you were doing with Christmas dinner! She says 'but it’s all frozen - with us not having turkey I didn't think you'd want the other stuff?"

After all the drama, the family did not have anything with their Christmas dinner last year and so the woman has said she will be doing all the cooking this year.
