MTV VMAs: Winners, fashions and key moments from the Video Music Awards, from Johnny Depp's bizarre appearance to Taylor Swift's album announcement

Taylor Swift's self-directed 10-minute video for her song All Too Well has been named Video of the Year at the MTV VMAs for 2022.

In her acceptance speech, Swift took the opportunity to announce the release date of her long-awaited new album in October, dropping an "I'll tell you more at midnight" before leaving the stage.

"I'm so honoured to have been recognised alongside such amazing artists and directors in this category," she said.

"I'm so heartened by the fact that for the first time in VMA history, four of the directors nominated in the Video of the Year category are women."

Some of music's biggest names gathered at the MTV Video Music Awards in New Jersey to celebrate the best music and film clips of the past year.

Eminem and Snoop Dogg, Jack Harlow, Lizzo, Måneskin and Red Hot Chili Peppers were among the performers, and the black carpet delivered the show-stopping shock value the VMAs are known for (remember Lady Gaga's meat dress?).

Speaking of shock value, the voice and face of Johnny Depp showed up in an astronaut suit between acts — his appearance at the event had been rumoured, but his cameo was short.

"I just want you guys to know I'm available for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need," he said via a digital screen on a "Moonperson" floating above the stage.

"You know what, I needed the work."

Depp has spent much of this year in the headlines over a defamation suit he filed against his ex-wife Amber Heard.

The VMAs ditched gendered categories in 2017 in favour of more inclusive awards, following the same decision from MTV's Movie and TV Awards earlier that year.

Lizzo was the only woman nominated for Artist of the Year, but the award went to Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny who accepted the Moonperson in the middle of his own show at Yankee Stadium.

The winners in most categories are chosen by public votes, which were cast online in the weeks leading up to the awards.
