MSU TE Jack Velling’s injury status unclear following win over Purdue

Michigan State football experienced another tough blow on Friday night, with tight end Jack Velling suffering a scary injury in the first half of the win over Purdue.

Velling took a hard hit from a Purdue defender on a high pass and was instantly down on the ground injured. The medical team came out to assess and quickly brought out the cart and then placed on the backboard.

Velling gave the stadium a thumbs up as he was taken off the field, and then transported to a local hospital. Following the game, head coach Jonathan Smith provided an update on Velling’s status.

“I spoke to him on the phone in the locker room just a bit ago,” Smith told reporters after the game. “(He’s) at the hospital. Thorough, precautionary type things, but he was in good spirits. He was able to watch the game.”

Velling followed Smith from Oregon State to Michigan State this past offseason. He has started every game for the Spartans, and has recorded 31 receptions for 334 yards this year.

Smith will next speak to the media on Monday during his weekly press conference. Hopefully, we will get a positive update on Velling’s status following this scary injury on Friday.
