Nakhon Si Thammarat MP Chinnaworn Bunyakiat has dismissed the opposition's claim that House members are deliberately aiming to shoot down two Election of MPs and Political Parties Act amendment bills after they have been scrutinised.
Earlier on Monday, opposition leader Cholnan Srikaew claimed that he heard from a government member of the House committee that manoeuvring was in motion to shoot down the bills.
When asked about the matter, Dr Cholnan refused to confirm whether what he heard was true.
Mr Chinnaworn, who is also a member of the scrutiny committee, following Dr Cholnan's statement said such a move against the dual-ballot system was inconceivable as it would run into fierce criticism from the public.
Mr Chinnaworn said the bill sinking claim was pure speculation.
"[Dr Cholnan] has made so many claims about a House dissolution, a military coup. None have come true," Mr Chinnaworn said.
The two bills, which are vital in the amendment of two organic laws on the current dual-ballot election system, sailed through the first reading and are now subject to scrutiny.
The two ballots are for electing a constituency MP and a political party separately. To bring back the one ballot system, the constitution must first be amended.
