Sir Keir Starmer was warned against a “stitch-up” to block leadership rival Andy Burnham from returning to Parliament in a by-election triggered by MP Andrew Gwynne quitting.
Mr Gwynne resigned on Friday, using the archaic way that MPs can stand down, by applying to be Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead.
