Moussa Dembele in fresh Celtic transfer windfall twist as desperate Manchester United return to Lyon star

Scrambling Manchester United are reportedly considering a late move for Moussa Dembele as they desperately search for new signings. The Old Trafford club are back in full-blown crisis mode after an appalling start to the Premier League season.

Erik ten Hag 's side sit bottom of the table after two matches and were battered 4-0 by Brentford on Saturday. United are badly in need of quality additions and a proven striker is a priority even before the potential departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been attempting to engineer a departure all summer long.

Ten Hag is reportedly set to bring in Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid for €50m but is still short of an out-and-out goalscorer as he approaches the final weeks of the window. Former Celtic star Dembele has been a long-term target at Old Trafford, dating back to former manager's Jose Mourinho's tenure, which ended back in late 2018.

The Manchester Evening News report the club's hierarchy remain in contact with the 26-year-old's camp as he enters the final year of his deal at Lyon. Celtic inserted a 15 per cent sell-on clause into the deal to sell Dembele to the Ligue 1 side for £19.8m four years ago.

The prospect of a cash windfall from a further sale has been on the cards for a considerable period, with Dembele consistently linked with big-money transfers as soon as a few months following his departure from Glasgow. But as he now enters the last 12 months of his contract with OL, the prospect of leaving on a free next summer heightens.

It's previously been reported that Dembele would be content to see out a final season with the club before moving on. However, a potential late move from United could quickly alter his situation.
