Mountain rescue teams scour Scots coast for missing man after car found abandoned

Mountain rescue teams have been scouring coastline in the Highlands in the search for a missing man whose car was found abandoned by police.

Roderick Augusto, 43, who has been reported missing from the Carlisle area, is believed to have travelled to Caithness on Christmas Day. On Friday police revealed that his vehicle was discovered by officers in the Dunnet Head area.

The Assynt Mountain Rescue Team were pictured checking cliffs and the water for Roderick at the weekend. Mercy crews - including police, coastguard and lifeboat teams - carried out an extensive search, however he was not traced.

Police say they are 'extremely concerned' for his welfare and they are continuing to appeal for information. Roderick is described as white, of slim athletic build and is bald.

Sergeant Jonny Wilkin, of Thurso Police Office, urged anyone who recognises Roderick or has information on his whereabouts to come forward.

The Assynt Mountain Rescue Team said: "Assynt MRT were called out yesterday to assist in an ongoing search for a vulnerable missing person. Another excellent example of team working between Highland and Islands Police Division, HM Coastguard Scrabster and Wick and Duncansby Coastguard.

"Thanks also to RNLI Thurso Lifeboat Station and Maritime and Coastguard Agency's Rescue 151 helicopter from Inverness who both assisted on previous days."

Sergeant Wilkin said: "We are extremely concerned for Roderick’s wellbeing, especially as he has not been seen or heard from for over a week."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 quoting reference 1593 of Thursday, January 5.
