Drivers have been warned to extend their stopping distances or risk breaking the Highway Code, as they "will at least double" during the wetter months.
October to January are typically the rainiest months in the UK and motorists should be aware that guidelines advise them to drive according to the road conditions - as tyres will have less traction in wet conditions.
Drivers can more easily feel the lack of grip in the ice and snow of winter, but in the wettest autumn months modern car tyres will grip the road effectively in the wet until they lose grip under hard braking. This can often take drivers by surprise and poses a risk to others on the road.
