A section of a busy main road in west Wales is set to be affected by roadworks for more than a fortnight due to “essential carriageway resurfacing”. The work is due to be carried out on a 3km stretch of the A48 between Pont Abraham and Cross Hands in Carmarthenshire.
Only the westbound side of the carriageway (heading towards Carmarthen) will be affected, with work beginning on Tuesday night (April 11) and expected to go on until April 26. According to Traffic Wales, the Welsh Government’s traffic information service for the motorway and trunk road network, the work will be carried out over 12 nights in total, with lane closures and convoy traffic control put in place. A lane closure on the westbound stretch will be effective between 7pm and 6am between Tuesday and Saturday, and then again between April 17 and April 26. Meanwhile, the entry and exit slip roads at Heol Parc Mawr Junction (Cross Hands Business Park) will be closed between 8pm and 6am on April 14 and 15.

Despite being carried out during the Easter school holidays, Traffic Wales has said “the works are being carried out overnight when traffic flows are historically lower to minimise disruption”. And with regard to diversions for those travelling along the route at the affected times: “Westbound traffic wishing to exit the A48 at Heol Parc Mawr will need to continue along the main carriageway to the Cross Hands roundabout, travel around the roundabout and back along the A48 to use the eastbound exit. Traffic wishing to join the A48 westbound at Heol Parc Mawr will need to turn right at Pontarddulais Road and then again at the junction with the A476 Llandeilo Road before joining the A48 at the Cross Hands roundabout.”
Cross Hands Roundabout has been the subject of a Welsh Transport Appraisal Guidance study, with a number of options being considered to make one of the most dangerous roundabouts in Wales safer. The study looked at the possibility of reducing the 70mph speed limit on the A48, and of blocking off some of the exits on Cross Hands roundabout and diverting traffic to and through other roads. To date, no firm plans have been confirmed for the roundabout or the adjoining A48 on both sides.
