A MOTORBIKE rider has been fined almost $3000 after he was clocked tearing along a busy motorway at 200 kilometres per hour.

Brisbane Water highway patrol officers were conducting speed enforcement on the M1 at Somersby, on the Central Coast, on Tuesday when a motorcycle caught their attention.

The police laser, known as a Lidar device, captured the rider travelling at 143 kilometres per hour.

Officers took off after the man and said his speed was observed to be increasing as they moved into position behind him.

Police said his speed was checked at 200 kilometres per hour when he was stopped at Ourimbah.

The man was "spoken to" and "apologised for his speed", a highway patrol spokesperson said.

He was hit with a penalty notice for exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 kilometres per hour, six demerit points, fined $2959, and his licence was immediately suspended for six months.

The motorbike's plates were also seized and surrendered for three months.
