Motherwell starlet has Albion Rovers transfer option as boss targets two signings

Albion Rovers boss Brian Reid hopes to add a striker and a centre-back to his ranks – and he’s not closing the door on a Cliftonhill return for Corey O’Donnell.

The Wee Rovers have a busy run of fixtures ahead after a weekend off due to Kelty Hearts’ involvement in Scottish Cup action, with several midweek matches planned, starting tonight against Edinburgh City.

Reid’s side are ninth in League Two and he is after reinforcements following a tough season battling injury and squad depth headaches.

O’Donnell spent the first half of the season on loan in Coatbridge from Premiership side Motherwell and the young forward impressed during his stint.

The Steelmen have him back at Fir Park and while he hasn’t made his return to Cliftonhill yet, Reid hopes a good relationship with Motherwell strengthens their case for it.

He said: “Corey’s one we had in and Motherwell recalled him. It wasn’t for anything untoward as I think it was good for all parties and Corey enjoyed it.

“We enjoyed having him but Motherwell wanted him back to have a look at him which we fully understand as they are entitled to do that. If Corey is available, then it’s maybe one we would have a look at.

“We have a good relationship with Motherwell, with chief executive Alan Burrows. Their manager, Graham Alexander, was great in helping us out the last time. That’s a relationship both parties can hopefully benefit from in future. We want to cement that.”

A defender is on the agenda too for Reid. Clubs are now allowed five substitutes at all tiers in SPFL football, which the Rovers boss believes has had an impact to shop in the loan window that is open until February 28.

Reid explained: “We are looking to get a centre-back in. That should be us after that and there might be room if a wildcard became available we would move on that, as the money is there.

“The club has helped us as much as they can. It’s just trying to get the right players in and trying to attract them in.”
