Motherwell star says they're not taking their foot off the pedal, and still have a point to prove

Callum Slattery knows that Motherwell probably secured their Premiership status with a 2-0 win over Kilmarnock on Saturday – but says they’re not taking their foot off the pedal.

Goals in each half from Blair Spittal and Kevin van Veen gave the Steelmen a comfortable win over Killie that pulls them to within two points of seventh-placed Livingston, and 10 clear of bottom side Ross County.

But midfielder Slattery says they still have a point to prove to people and that means winning as many games as possible.

When asked if the win means they can relax and not look behind them, he said: “I don’t think it will ever be a case of that, really.

“Even with four games left, we’re going to take each one as it comes and not relax – we’re going into them with the same mind-set that we do in every game, so it won’t be a case of taking the foot off the pedal.

“It has been some turn-around this season,, and that’s a credit to the manager and the players, but we’re still saying in there that we’re not done yet.

“We’ve got games left that we want to go out and prove ourselves to people in and win each game.”

Slattery knew Motherwell were going to need to dig in against Kilmarnock to make sure they took the three points against a side that is fighting for their lives, and are now just a point above Ross County.

He said: “I was very pleased. We knew it was going to be a tough game, and not the prettiest game of football we were going into, but we had to deal with that and come on top of the battle. I think we did that.

“We expected to have to dig in, it was that sort of game, but I think we came out of the battles on top all throughout the game, really, and that’s what got us the result.

“It was good times to get the goals. Getting an early goal is always nice, and it’s just keeping that momentum going, and the second just seals the deal, really.

“Momentum is going to be important, but we’re still taking each game as it comes.

“That’s our plan, to go into each game and try to take three points from every game that we can, and that’s one step in the right direction.”
