Motherwell star says competition for places means pressure is on

Sean Goss says pressure is on everybody at Motherwell, because there’s always somebody breathing down your neck, looking to take your place.

Competition for places is fierce at the Fir Park club, with several players returning to fitness at a good time, but that means disappointment for those who aren’t involved.

Boss Stuart Kettlewell says it’s difficult to get into his team or even his bench, and Goss reckons that’s something that can only help.

As he looks ahead to tomorrow’s Premiership visit by Livingston, Goss said: “There is competition and that is a big difference – we were struggling for numbers at certain points in the season, and that has an effect on training as well.

“Now there’s no excuse, everybody’s got to be at it every day in training, because if not there’s someone who is going to be knocking on the door behind you.

“There has been a shift in attitude. Training has been really good quality, the new boys who have come in during January have done really well, so that’s what you want, competition every day.

Goss bagged his first goal of the season with a stunning free kick in the 3-1 win over Hibs at Easter Road on Saturday, and while he wants to add goals to his game, says he’s happy to be part of a winning team.

“I scored at the start of April last year as well, but I don’t think I’ve scored before Christmas, so hopefully next year I’ll get an extra present,” he said.

“I’m actively looking to add more goals to my game, but I’m playing a bit deeper, just in front of the back four, so it’s not always on for me to get forward.

“We’ve changed shape. We’re still trying to work on similar things, trying to get on the ball, but I give that extra bit of protection for the back three as well.

“I’d love to add more goals to my game, but I might get a bit of a seeing to if I’m out of position!”

Goss was pleased to hit the net and says it’s nice to be rewarded for good performances.

He said: “It was a good performance from the boys, I thought we were well deserved of the win, and we could maybe even have had a couple more, so it was a good result.

“We’ve had a really good run, and we’ve been deserving of the results as well.

“I think that was a frustration at the start of the season, that we maybe deserved more from games, but now we’re getting our rewards and just looking to build as many points as we can.

“We’re in a good place at the moment. The run we’ve been on has been really positive and I feel like we’re getting the rewards for how we’ve been playing as well.”
