Motherwell star can't wait for European debut as his two key adjustments after January transfer highlighted

Motherwell's Joe Efford is excited to step into a new frontier when the Steelmen begin their Europa Conference League campaign.

The Fir Park club's Premiership season came to a disappointing end on Saturday as champions Celtic swept past them 6-0 on title day.

But it was all but job done already by the time they got to Parkhead after victories over Hearts and Ross County in games previous, although they did lose out on fourth to Dundee United.

It means Graham Alexander's men finish the term fifth and will enter UEFA's new competition at the second qualifying round in July.

Efford joined in January from Belgian side Waasland-Beveren and he's scored three goals with one assist in 16 matches. Working with boss Alexander has been fruitful as they look to continental action.

The American said: "I’m glad that after coming in January I was able to help the team to reach their goals.

“Scottish football is a different thing to what I’ve been used to playing in the past with the physicality and the speed of the play being not the same I’ve known before.

“But the experience has been a good one and I’m happy with the way I’ve adjusted to it all. I’m looking forward to next season.

“European football is something to look forward to and to prepare for. It will be new for me and it’s exciting. The manager has done well and I’m excited for the opportunity to keep working with him.

“He’s a good character with me personally and I’m pleased to be working for and with him.”

Despite being pleased with how the season has ended up for Motherwell, Efford was left disappointed by their performance against a rampant Celtic side.

The forward added: “It’s not the result we wanted on the final day of course. We wanted to finish a place higher in the final table.

"We’re happy that we made Europe and we look forward to these things. Overall it’s been a good season.”
