A brother and sister attacked their mum’s neighbours after a row over bins.
Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week that one of the victims still feels the effects of the assault some two-and-a-half years down the line.
Catherine Rowlands, 40, of Lodge Tower, Motherwell, admitted assaulting a woman while Jamie Rowlands, 39, of Bellshill Road, Motherwell, admitted attacking a man.
Violence flared in the town’s Dalriada Crescent in December 2019.
Chloe O’Hara, prosecuting, said the male victim was putting rubbish in a bin when he became involved in an argument with Catherine Rowlands and this escalated with the arrival of the other parties.
The fiscal stated: “Jamie Rowlands picked up a stick and chased the male victim into a common close before striking him on the body with the stick and punching him on the face.
“Catherine Rowlands then struck the woman on the head and body.”
Both victims were taken to hospital.
The man had bruising about the eye and a sore finger while the woman sustained fractures to her nose and finger.
Ms O’Hara told the court: “Later she was referred to a specialist regarding the injury to her nose.
“She continues to suffer breathing issues and the finger does not straighten.”
Defence agent Diarmid Bruce said the siblings’ mum was upset because the neighbours were using her bin.
He stated: “It was overflowing and rats had appeared.
“My clients are disappointed that the disagreement with the neighbours got out of hand in this way.”
Sheriff Thomas Millar deferred sentence until next month and allowed both accused to remain on bail.
